Connecting with students in the mobile world

Fact:  86% of students recently indicated a preference for mobile apps over mobile web/browser based solutions to access school information.  (Source: Yahoo’s Flurry analytics, ComScore, Net Market Share)

Simply stated, the mobile era is here to stay, and mobile apps are an overwhelmingly important part of it.  Statistics show that almost all students between 17 and 25 years of age have smart phones, and when they need to check information or access content, they do so via a mobile app.

Email Communication Becoming Less Effective

Students are accustomed to app notifications and instant chat messaging.  Emails are checked less frequently by today’s students, jeopardizing an institution’s ability to properly engage and communicate with them.  As mobile adoption has grown, the email channel is becoming less and less effective.

As a result, it is imperative that institutions account for a mobile app strategy to effectively reach students.  Mobile notifications can provide a way for schools to ensure that their student messages are seen and read.

In addition, a school mobile app can help build awareness and access to vital student services, links, and resources.  Apps can also provide a great way to keep students engaged and motivated.  Recent studies show that today’s students spends over 4 hours a day on mobile devices, and 90% of the time is spent in apps (see chart below).
